Wear Red Day project
GO RED FOR WOMEN 2011

The Livingston Health Department’s celebration of “Go Red for Women,” in support of National Wear Red Day, was held in the Township Municipal building on February 4, 2011. The Nursing Division provided educational materials on the dangers of heart disease, and sold Red Dress pins to raise funds for The American Heart Association, which uses all its revenue to support awareness, research, education, and community programs to reduce the risk of heart disease in women.

“Township staff members from different departments joined us on the day by wearing red in support of this wonderful cause,” reported Dolores Keller, Health Education Coordinator. “We were also joined by students from Seton Hall University School of Nursing.”

Under the direction of Dr. Cathy Sternas, Associate Professor at the College of Nursing, students created a class project for the “Go Red for Women” campaign. This included posters, quizzes, and printed handouts on heart disease and prevention. The handouts included information on wise food choices and the importance of exercise.

“The Health Department provides internships for student nurses in their senior year, giving them the opportunity to gain real-life community experience,” Keller continued. “In return, the students become a valuable resource for the health department in its mission to help keep Livingston residents safe and healthy."
