In order to clear up some confusion about the residential
recycling ordinance in Livingston, I can offer some advice
to homeowners that will help them understand the biweekly
collections.
Every other week a curbside collection
occurs; one week bottles, cans and certain plastics are
collected and the next week paper, newspaper and cardboard
are collected.
During
the "co-mingled" collection, the following
items can be put at the curb for collection: plastic
and glass bottles (clear, brown, green and blue soda,
water, condiment and food bottles, etc), laundry, bleach
and cleaning containers, aluminum and steel cans (soda, juice
and other beverage cans as well as soup, food and pet
food cans) and aluminum pie tins and foil.
During
the paper collection week, the following
items can be put at the curb for collection: newspaper,
white and colored paper, brochures, catalogues, greeting
cards, junk mail (even "window" envelopes), phone books,
hard and soft cover books. Cereal and corrugated
cardboard boxes must be flattened and bundled and packing
materials must be removed.
Removing these items from the refuse will be a great improvement
as we try to reduce, reuse and recycle. The township's "Living
Green" committee is committed to making Livingston an
exemplary "green community" that exhibits sustainable practice
in its operations and community life. Increasing our
recycling efforts is a good way to "go green"! There
will be more information about recycling and other integrated "green" efforts
as the fall approaches.
