HCHY's Strong Families Committee presented a second series of Neighborhood Coffees in November entitled "Feeling Safe in an Unsafe World: Coping Skills for the 21st Century." Eight Coffees were held in homes and community sites and were attended by over 50 community members, a professional facilitator and local high school students.
The groups discussed today's critical challenges; how both young people and adults can develop skills, strategies and resilience to cope effectively; and how individuals, families and communities can support one another through difficult times.
From participant feedback, several recurring themes emerged including:
- people feel emotionally safe when they have human contact;
- the basic values that are important to people have remained the same;
- regardless of their ages, people still have a lot in common and they need to make intergenerational connections; and
- we all need to get back to basics and to feel like we belong.

The next meeting of the Strong Families Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center on Hillside Ave. New members are welcome. Please RSVP to Committee Co-chair Robin Beckerman at rgmz4@aol.com.
