"Jesse's Journey"

PARENTS: Have you ever heard about a drug overdose or drug-related death and said,

"Not my kid!"?

Do you know about your child's drug use but think it's okay because it's only pot or a right of passage, or have you put it out of your mind because it's too painful to think about?  If you found out today that your child was experimenting with drugs, what would you do?

This episode is very special because Jesse and his family have had to grapple with the devastating consequences of hard drug use.  Their frightful experience could save your child's life.  Livingston's middle school students and the senior class at LHS have recently met Jesse and heard what his family had to say. With the end of the school year upon us, you owe it to yourself and those you love to watch this episode.

Four Agreements

The Four Agreements

by Don Miguel Ruiz

Don Miguel Ruiz's book, The Four Agreements was published in 1997. For many, The Four Agreements is a life-changing book, whose ideas come from the ancient Toltec wisdom of the native people of Southern Mexico.

We offer these excerpts for your consideration:

Agreement 1

Be impeccable with your word - Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Agreement 2

Don't take anything personally - Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

Agreement 3

Don't make assumptions - Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Agreement 4

Always do your best - Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

12th Annual Youth Appreciation Week celebrated by Livingston

HCHY's coordination of the 12th Annual "Livingston Youth Appreciation Week" proved to be not only a rousing success, but a labor of love by all those involved. With week-long activities including a Town Council meeting featuring the Children's Theatre of Livingston, the Harlem Wizard's Basketball Clinic, Library Events, and an evening reception honoring families of active servicemen and women, the celebration culminated in Saturday's Family Festival, "Lance's Lounge" Battle of the Bands, Mall Mystery Hunt, Movie Under the Stars featuring "Happy Feet", a Family Camp-Out, The Cole Brothers Circus (complete with a raise-the-big-top event), a Classic Car Show, and the annual Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade.  The celebration could not have been accomplished without the tremendous support of our donors and volunteers.

Mentoring Summit GroupA Year in the Life of  HCHY

Where we've been
and where we're headed - the short list

Utilizing the youth-development model of America's Promises which emerged from the Summit of U.S. Presidents in 1997, the Partners of Livingston's HCHY are committed to delivering the five promises to our young people and to becoming a true "Community of Promise".  The Five Promises and HCHY's efforts in these areas are as follows:

Caring Adults:

  • Over 100 community residents participated in HCHY's Community-wide Mentoring Summits and student surveys were administered leading to the development of job shadowing and internship opportunities as well as peer to peer groups among middle and high school students
  • Livingston Public Schools' Listen to Children Program received recognition from the National School Boards Association for its K-8 program which pairs senior citizens and students for one-to-one mentoring.

Safe Places to Gather:

  • Working closely with Municipal officials, HCHY is developing a Teen Center and Skate Park
  • Livingston celebrated the creation and inaugural performance of The Children's Theater Group

A Healthy Start in Life:

  • Livingston recently received national recognition from ColumbiaUniversity's Teen Screen program for having one of the highest student participation rates in the nation and the highest in NJ.  This mental health screening program for Livingston teens was one of the original recommendations made in the 2004 HCHY Report. 2006 was Livingston's 3rd year of involvement with the program.  Representatives from Livingston were recently interviewed for the News Hour with Jim Lehrer on PBS.
  • HCHY is partnering with St Barnabas Medical Center to raise community awareness of SDS (Sudden Death Syndrome), an often silent cardiac condition that affects 10% of our young people.

Effective Education:

  • HCHY's Mentoring Program will introduce students to a variety of professional and personal opportunities with the goal of developing areas of interest and marketable skills for the future.

Opportunities to Serve:

  • Increasing numbers of Livingston youth have joined the CAC (Community Action Club) in the High School and Middle School.  The club is a direct off-shoot of HCHY.
  • Students have begun to submit articles to our local paper regarding HCHY opportunities.
  • Students have established "information stations" in the lunchrooms for sharing HCHY efforts with their classmates.
  • Students have created and made formal presentations to municipal officials requesting Town Council and County support and funding for youth projects.

In addition, HCHY is currently:

  • Collaborating on the establishment of a community-wide calendar with the local Chamber of Commerce.
  • Disseminating monthly HCHY E-Newsletters throughout the community.
  • Coordinating Neighborhood Coffees throughout Livingston to foster intergenerational dialogue and community connections.  Approximately 20 coffees are being planned for the spring of 2008.
  • Continuing to engage additional sectors in the community including businesses, professionals, and our Asian community members.  Cross-cultural dialogue is increasing and new, productive relationships have been established.
  • Exploring a 'Healthy Community·Healthy Senior' initiative to support our senior citizen population.
  • Continuing to reach out to neighboring communities as well as other initiatives throughout the US and Canada to share best practices in youth and community development, benefiting from programs like MVParents, the Montclair Coordinated School Health Program, and the Bernards Township "Building Youth" program.
  • Working with the Montclair CSHP to schedule roundtables with UWNE Divisions' community leaders to share best practices and expand AssetBuilding initiatives.
  • Provided the resources for the HCHY Executive Coordinator to become a certified grant writer, thereby expanding funding opportunities.
