Livingston Robotics Club is Now Part of HCHY
Livingston Robotics Club ("LRC") is now part of HCHY! The Robotic Club has decided to become part of HCHY to promote its expansion in local communities and to become eligible to receive corporate sponsorships. The Club was formed in 2007, when the very first Livingston team, Landroids, competed in the international science and robotic tournament known as the FIRST LEGO League ("FLL"). In 2008, LRC expanded to include four Livingston FLL teams: Landroids; SciBoTechs; Landrias; and Alpha Force. Together these teams consist of seven volunteer coaches, 21 students from Heritage and Mt. Pleasant Middle Schools, and Collins and Harrison Elementary Schools, as well as students from Morris Plains, South Orange and Pinebrook.
During this season, three out of the four Livingston Robotics Club FLL teams received awards. As a result, these teams qualified to participate in the 2008 New Jersey State tournaments. This represents an unprecedented high percentage of recognition given to any New Jersey town, organization or school district for a student-oriented activity. These teams' successes are due to the efforts of the dedicated parents and coaches who have worked side by side with the hard-working and committed student participants.
Currently the four FLL teams are set up as follows:
Landroids: This team is led by John Yeh and Pearl Hwang The team consists of six Heritage Middle School 7th graders and a 6th grader from Peck School. Landroids was the 2007 New Jersey State Champions Award winner and the 2008 World Festival Robot Design and Robot Performance Award winner. Landroids has also recently received the Champions Award at the qualifying tournament in Hamilton.
SciBoTechs: A competitive FLL team led by Dr. Po-Shing Lee, is co-coached by Janice Pepper and Sue Wasserman. The eight team members are from local communities and range in age from 9 to 12 years. The team receives intense training in project research, robot design and performance, and teamwork. SciBoTechs has recently received the 1st place award in the Research Project at the qualifying tournament in Hamilton.
Landrias: This is an all-girls team. Three of the team members are 5th graders from Collins School, who are the little sisters of the Landroids and SciBoTechs team members. Landrias is jointly trained by John Yeh (robotics) and Dr. Po-Shing Lee (project). The program's goal is to inspire the girls' intense interests in science and engineering, while allowing them to have fun. Landrias has recently received the 2nd place award in Robot Design at the qualifying tournament in Montclair.
Livingston Alpha Force: This is the youngest team in the club, its three members range in age from 8 to 12 years. The team is coached by Janea and Jojo Agbayani. This group's goal is to for the members to have lots of fun playing together, while learning about science, building with LEGOs, and to start to focus on programming.
The FIRST LEGO League State Championship tournament will be held on December 13, 2008 at Mt. Olive High School, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
