Second Neighborhood Coffees

Are Well Received

HCHY's Strong Families Committee presented a second series of Neighborhood Coffees in November entitled "Feeling Safe in an Unsafe World: Coping Skills for the 21st Century."  Eight Coffees were held in homes and community sites and were attended by over 50 community members, a professional facilitator and local high school students.  The groups discussed today's critical challenges; how both young people and adults can develop skills, strategies and resilience to cope effectively; and how individuals, families and communities can support one another through difficult times.  From participant feedback, several recurring themes emerged including; people feel emotionally safe when they have human contact, the basic values that are important to people have remained the same, regardless of their ages, people still have a lot in common and they need to make intergenerational connections, and we all need to get back to basics and to feel like we belong.  For full details of the participant survey and feedback forms click here

The next meeting of the Strong Families Committee is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10th at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Center on Hillside Ave.  New members are welcome.  Please RSVP to Committee Co-chair Robin Beckerman at rgmz4@aol.com.

Losing a Ton in Livings-ton

Kick-off Meeting Scheduled for Wednesday Evening, February 4th

Livingston Mayor Charles (Buddy), in conjunction with HCHY is inviting any and all Livingston residents and employees to join him and HCHY in a healthy lifestyle initiative.  Martha Ackermann, Co-chair of the Committee said that the kick-off meeting will be a brainstorming session to involve as many people as possible to be involved in "Losing a Ton."  "Our concept is that if we can LOSE a TON in LivingsTON, we can all be LIVING better, healthier lives in Livingston."  The program that is being developed will be for adults to begin and will be expanded to include children.  The first meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, February 4th in the Hillside Ave. Community Center at 7:30 p.m.  Anyone interested in donating a few pounds, changing their lifestyle habits, or joining a group exercise initiative is welcome.  If you can offer professional expertise or a service such as personal training or offer special foods in your restaurant, or whatever might help to get the group healthier, you are invited to attend.  The group is happy to have Roslyn and Skip Mofsenson as facilitators of the group.  We will be meeting weekly, depending on schedules and also joining together in group exercise.  The YMCA is proud to sponsor this program and will be offering a free membership to the "biggest" loser.  Community members who are interested in participating should e-mail Martha Ackermann at marthacack@aol.com or call her at 973.535.9679 to RSVP.

 Livingston Robotics Club

During the 2008 FIRST LEGO League (FLL) season, 3 out of the 4 Livingston Robotics Club FLL teams advanced to the New Jersey State tournament and subsequently received the Champion's award or 2nd place awards in the robot performance, robot design or research project category.  This represents an unprecedented high percentage of recognition given to any New Jersey town, organization or school district for a student-run activity.  These team's successes are due to the efforts of the hard-working student participants, dedicated coaches, and supportive team parents.

The SciBo Techs, Landrias and Landroids teams will be at the Liberty Science Center on February 16th for the FIRST LEGO League Exhibition, hosted by team Landroids. There will be free programming workshops offered in the Storming Robots Learning Center.  Please click on this flyer for more information about the event.
