POETRY WORKSHOPS
November 15 - December 13, 2011
Sponsored by the Arts Council of Livingston
Led by Dodge Fellow poet Kenneth Ronkowitz, The Arts Council of Livingston will sponsor a poetry workshop each Tuesday for four weeks beginning November 15 at the ACL Gallery in the Livingston Town Center. All four sessions will run from 7-8:30 p.m. and will conclude December 13 with poets reading works crafted during instructional sessions the previous three classes.
Supported by a grant from Essex County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, the series will expose participants to a variety of poetic forms including haiku, found poetry and art from found objects, sonnet, sestina, and others. Participants will be encouraged to create original works using these techniques, and will receive coaching on presenting them at the Poetry Night.
In addition to assistance from visiting guest poets who will teach poetic techniques and perform their works, Ronkowitz will offer guidance drawing from his background as a professor in the humanities at New Jersey Institute of Technology and Passaic County Community College, where he is also Director of the Writing Initiative. He has worked with the Geraldine Dodge Foundation on poetry projects in New Jersey and is the recipient of two Dodge Foundation Writing Grants.
Guest instructors will include Livingston High School English and creative writing teacher Susan Rothbard, the 2011 Finch Prize for Poetry recipient, and PCCC Writing Center director Elizabeth Nesius.
In addition, Perry Award winning scenic designer Hugh Mahon, a former art teacher in the Livingston school system, will provide a visual arts component to the series.
Enrollment in this series and attendance at the poetry night are free to members of the community. Class size will be limited to 15 participants. Advance registration is necessary for the instructional sessions, but not for the Poetry Night, where friends and family of the poetry readers are also invited.
