LIVINGSTON
TOWNSHP PROCLAIMS
JANUARY 2010 RADON ACTION MONTH
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer,
after cigarette smoking, and the leading cause of death for non-smokers.
The Livingston, New Jersey Health Department wishes to share this
information with residents to help them to protect their families
from the risk of lung cancer.
Radon occurs naturally in the soil and can affect
any home. It is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown
of naturally occurring uranium in soil. It is invisible, odorless
and tasteless and can be detected by special tests. It may enter
homes through openings that are in contact with the ground, such
as cracks in the foundation, small openings around pipes and sump
pits. Even though the home next store may have been tested and the
results were negative, your home may have dangerous levels.
Fortunately
radon testing is easy and inexpensive. Once identified, radon repairs
can be fixed-at the cost of a typical home repair. The DEP (Department
of Environmental Protection) recommends all homes be tested for
radon. For more information or a list of radon mitigation businesses,
