FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT
RECYCLING AND RECLAMATION
- How do I recycle used motor oil from my car, snow blower, lawnmower, etc? Used motor oil should be placed in a tightly sealed container and taken to the Firestone store on Mt. Pleasant Avenue or any other service station that will accept it. It can also be taken to Essex County’s semi-annual household hazardous waste collections in May and October (see Essex County Utilities Authority website, www.ecuanj.com, for dates and directions to the site).
- How do I dispose of old automobile tires? Metal rim(s) must be removed and put at the curb for the Township to pick up on the metals collection day. Call 973-992-5000 to arrange for this prior to noon on the Friday before the last Wednesday of the month. Put the rubber tire(s) at the curb for pick up on your last (bulk) collection day of the month.
- How do I dispose of CFLs (compact fluorescent light bulbs- the curly ones)? These items can be taken to Home Depot or Ikea; both companies accept used CFLs. They should not be thrown in the garbage as they contain a small amount of mercury which will contaminate the landfill. They can also be taken to the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste collection events in the spring and fall (see www.ecuanj.com for event dates and directions).
- How do I safely dispose of oil based and latex paint? Refer to the website earth911.com for exact information. Old paint may contain lead. Oil-based paint must go to the County’s household hazardous waste collection site (see www.ecuanj.com for details). Dry latex paint is not a problem and can be disposed of in your regular weekly garbage pickup. Remove the lid and make sure the leftover paint is dry. If it is not, add kitty litter or sawdust or strips of newspaper to speed the process. If you have a large amount of leftover paint, consider donating it to a neighbor, local charity or theatre.
- How can I recycle old cell phones? Most electronics and cell phone retailers will accept used cell phones, batteries and accessories. There are also several charitable organizations that collect cell phones. One of them is the Knights of Pythias in Livingston, contact Murray Green at 973-422-0330. Old cell phones can also be brought to Livingston’s or Essex County’s electronics recycling events in the spring and fall.
- In addition to the above mentioned items, many other items can and should be reused, recycled or given a new life. Old indoor and outdoor furniture, sporting equipment, children’s toys and household items can be “recycled” through www.freecycle.org, garage sales or donations to charitable organizations or neighbors. It is always good to give a product a new life instead of putting it into the landfill. Additionally, another item does not have to be manufactured to replace it.
