Water Service Line Ownership
The water service line is the underground pipe which connects a building to the water main that is in the street (or easement). A diagram showing the water service line ownership can be found HERE. A preview is below. Please not the water service shutoff box, also know as a curb box, is the responsibility of the Township of Livingston Water Department. Only Township of Livingston staff may operate this shutoff. If the box lid becomes missing, buried or shifted, the Township will excavate or repair the box as necessary

Sewer Lateral Line Ownership
The sewer lateral line is the underground pipe which connects a building to the sewer main that is in the street (or easement). A diagram showing the sewer lateral line ownership can be found HERE. A preview is below. The property is owner is responsibility for maintaining the sanitary sewer cleanout, including replacing the lid, uncovering it if buried, and repairing it if broken. It is the property owner's responsibility to keep the sewer lateral clear and if there is a backup they have to clear the lateral. This includes the entire length of the sewer lateral from the house to the sewer main, regardless of if a portion of the lateral is in the street. It is the Township's responsibility to clear a backup in the sewer main.
